What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization Explained (2026)

Türkçe oku

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting a business named and recommended inside the answers produced by generative AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.

Classic search optimization tries to rank a page in a list of links. GEO has no list to rank in: it tries to get your name into a single answer.

Why it became a separate job

Because the interface changed. People no longer type "best coffee shop London" and scan ten blue links. They ask "where should I go to work from a quiet café in Shoreditch?" — and get three names.

Two consequences follow:

  • Being chosen replaced ranking. Being tenth in a list of links is worth something. There is no tenth name in an answer. You are either in it or you are not.
  • Recommendation replaced clicks. The customer decides based on what the AI said about you, often without visiting your site. If you are not writing your own description, something else is writing it for you.

SEO vs GEO

They are not rivals. Good SEO groundwork makes GEO easier — but ranking first in Google does not guarantee you exist in an AI answer. That exact gap is the most common thing we see: first on Google, absent from ChatGPT.

How big is the gap?

We measured 1,975 businesses in Turkey in September 2026: 93% were never mentioned in the AI answer to a normal question in their own category (AI Visibility Index, Turkish).

The sample is Turkish, so treat the exact number as local. The shape of it is not local: in almost every category, most businesses are simply absent — because almost nobody has done this work yet.

The four layers of GEO

1. Access — can they read you? AI crawlers (GPTBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) have to be able to fetch your site. If robots.txt blocks one of them, that engine never reads you. Checking takes a minute: AI crawler check.

2. Readability — what do they find once inside? There has to be actual text. What you do, where you are, who you serve — written out. Information baked into an image does not exist as far as a machine is concerned. An llms.txt file adds a plain summary layer on top.

3. Legibility — do you say clearly who you are? Schema.org structured data declares your name, address, hours and services in machine-readable form, so they stop being things the engine has to guess.

4. Credibility — what does everyone else say about you? The slowest and most decisive layer. Reviews, directories, news, comparison posts. An engine trusts what other people repeat about you far more than what you say about yourself.

Where to start

In this order, and the order matters:

  1. Measure. Which engines mention you, which ignore you? Work started on a guess gets spent in the wrong place. A free scan takes about a minute.
  2. Remove the technical blocks. Crawler access and readability — the fastest wins live here.
  3. Tell machines who you are. Structured data and consistent business details.
  4. Grow third-party presence. Reviews and directories; measured in months, not days.
  5. Measure again. GEO is a loop — measure, fix, re-measure — because both your content and the engines keep changing.

Common questions

Is GEO the same as AEO? Close but not identical. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets systems that return direct answers — featured snippets, voice assistants. GEO targets the models that generate the answer. In practice most of the work overlaps.

Can you pay to be recommended? Today there is no product that lets you pay ChatGPT to recommend you. Ad formats are appearing, but organic recommendation is not for sale — which is exactly why earning it still works.

How long does it take? Technical fixes show up in days. Getting into the recommendation list usually takes months. Be sceptical of anyone giving you a precise date.

GEO is not a one-off setup, it is a measurement habit. If you do not know what AI says about you today, you cannot tell what changed tomorrow.
